Ugandan weightlifter Julius Ssekitolekowho went missing from a pre-Olympics camp in western Japan has been deported and flown home before the official commencement of the games.
Ssekitoleko’s mother, his pregnant wife and government officials who had travelled to Entebbe airport in Uganda to meet him on Friday morning were not given the opportunity to greet him on arrival
Julius Ssekitoleko is currently being held at Uganda police headquarters to determine whether or not he had committed a crime, CID Spokesperson Charles Twino said. He left the Olympics camp a week ago and was later found by the authorities buying a railway ticket.
The Ugandan ministry of foreign affairs said the athlete is being “rehabilitated” at moment.
The ministry also stated that the government will help him understand how such acts of misconduct will not only affect him as an athlete but also other athletes in the sports sector and the nation as a whole.
